Purpose: Respiratory measurements are easily made to evaluate to an individual¡¯s sports capability as well as pulmonary function for the activities performed on the ground such as walking or bicycling. However, under water environment makes it difficult to make respiratory measurements. The present study developed a device continuously measuring the respiratory air flow rate under water, and the steady pressure-flow characteristics were evaluated.
Materials and methods: A transducer, attached with snorkle, capable of measuring the respiratory air flow rate was developed. Experiments were performed to evaluate the calibration formula between pressure and flow rate.
Results: A quadratic equation well fitted the pressure and flow rate data with relative errors<3% in both inspiration and expiration.
Conclusion: The present transducer enabled to monitor the respiratory air flow signal under water, therefore would be of good application for measurement and analyze of swimmer's breathing activities.
